Arrowhead's storied legacy ends as the Chiefs prepare to relocate to a brand-new domed stadium, shifting their home to Kansas by 2031.

On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced they will be leaving Arrowhead Stadium in favor of a new, domed stadium that will be built across the state line in Kansas. The stadium is expected to be complete at the start of the 2031 season.

It’s bittersweet news for Chiefs fans, as Arrowhead Stadium has become a huge part of the team’s identity, being home to some of, if not the loudest, fans in all of football. The Chiefs have been playing their football at Arrowhead for over 50 years, and in that time, they’ve made it to five Super Bowls and won three.

Not only is there loads of history tied to Arrowhead, but the new stadium will now take the Chiefs out of Missouri and over into the Kansas portion of Kansas City. The new stadium is intended to be built near the entertainment district called The Legends, near the home of the MLS team, Kansas City Sporting.

"The location of Chiefs games will change, but some things won't change,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said about the move. “Our fans will still be the loudest in the NFL, our games will still be the best place in the world to tailgate, and our players and coaches will be ready to compete for championships, because on the field or off the field, we are big dreamers, and we're ready for the next chapter."

According to Sam McDowell, Matthew Kelly, and Kacen Bayless of The Kansas City Star, the move out of Arrowhead has been in motion since April of 2024. This is when Jackson County, Missouri, voters rejected a 40-year extension of a sales tax that would have funded renovations to Arrowhead Stadium and a new stadium for the MLB team, the Kansas City Royals. Kansas officials then took advantage of the opportunity, ultimately bringing the Chiefs across state lines.

"Today's announcement is truly historic. Actually, it's a little surreal," Kansas Governor Laura Kelly said. "Today's announcement will touch the lives of Kansans for generations to come. Today's announcement is a total game-changer for our state.

"We have always been Chiefs fans. Now we are Chiefs family."

2025 has already been a season full of surprises and tough pills to swallow for Chiefs fans. They will miss out on the playoffs for the first time in over a decade, and now, they have to grapple with the news of their team leaving the iconic Arrowhead Stadium. The one thing that can remedy the hurt will be for the Chiefs to bring winning football to their new home in Kansas.
